CIMB Trade Union Alliance A Priority; ABUC Council Members

![]() ABUC need to move forward aggressively in an environment where bank employees tenure of employment is killing the confidence of every banker in ASEAN region said; Joseph Solomon President at his welcome remarks to the 8th ABUC Meeting. Commending on UNI Apro strategies to pro-actively engage in the ASEAN Economic integration process to promote and propagate workers and trade union interest through ASETUC Solomon emphasized the need to improve the communications between the banking union leaders in the region on common issues. He further said that a re-launch the ABUC activities with agreed timelines and work plans are necessary. CIMB Bank is aggressively expanding its operations, the bank has acquired Bank of Commerce in Philippines said Ng Peng Ho General Secretary of Union Executive CIMB [UEC]; many of our members are uncertain about their job securities as the bank may outsource to Manila with the new take over for cost advantageous. To address these challenges closer cooperation amongst trade unions are necessary, Ng Peng Ho proposed that UNI Apro and ABUC to initiate a Trade Union Alliance in CIMB operations in the region. Proposal was endorsed by ABUC members who represent members in CIMB operations in Malaysia. Catherine Jikunan Vice President of UNI Apro Finance and an employee of CIMB Bank informed the business model of the bank and the challenges faced by the employees meeting the targets. She informed the council that a familiarization meeting was held with the union officials of Bank of Commerce in Manila previous day and look forward to work in alliance to protect employees’ interest across the region. Jun Umali National President of NUBE emphasized the need for ABUC members to prioritize issues and aggressively works cohesively as the threats on job security of bank employees are high and the bank employers are adopting new strategies to benefit out of the ASEAN economic integration process which will be in by 2015. Umali emphasized on the need to agree on work plan to improve the capacity and capability of ABUC leaders to effectively meet the challenges. Karuna Anatharasa NUBE Malaysia said De-classification of jobs performed by employees in banks, automation, and artificial promotions are seriously attributing to the declining membership of the unions. Over dependence of computerized decision support systems is not good for banks when systems fail they do not have the capacity to correct by themselves.
