UNI’s affiliates in Europe report huge support for the Day of Action and Solidarity. Madrid and other European capitals held rallies where thousands came together to call for end to austerity. The Spanish people in particular came out in force to show that they have had enough of austerity and cuts.



UNI Europa Regional Secretary Oliver Roethig said that the Europe Day of Action and Solidarity which saw general strikes in Spain, Greece and Portugual was a marker in the sand against the unacceptable tide of austerity. The UNI World Executive Board which met on the Day of Action joined with him in calling for an end to austerity and a real growth and jobs strategy.



UNI General Secretary, Philip Jennings said, "Austerity 2012 doesn't work and will take the social unrest gauge clear off the dial. It raises the question what motivates this elite to pursue an agenda which is false and doesn't deliver sustainable economies? In Greece, Spain and Italy what we really seeing is a grab for power and one that excludes unions and the voice of the working people. We join with all our European affiliates and indeed with our global UNI family in demanding change, That is what the Europe day of Action and Solidarity is about and the UNI Global Union World Executive Board is proud to be a part of it."





The Day of Action was called by the ETUC. ETUC General Secretary Bernadette Ségol addressed the marchers at a rally in Brussels.
