An unprecedented attack was committed against the trade unionists of the UGTT in Tunis on December 4th, 2012, the day of the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the assassination of the founder of the trade union organization and a leader of the national liberation movement: Farhat Hached.



This attack took place within the premises of the Central Association of the UGTT by militias ruling Islamist party Ennahdha, organized in the form of what they call the "League protection of the revolution."

This is not the first attack against the UGTT as well as against activists of human rights, political parties and civil society.



In recent months, several local UGTT offices throughout the country were ransacked, burnt or covered with waste from rubbish. Activists were attacked, cars were put on fire.



It seems obvious that the Nahdha is trying to intimidate the UGTT to put under silence its commitment to democracy, freedom and social justice.



The UGTT executive committee held an emergency meeting and decided to call for a general strike this Thursday, December 13, 2012. If the Tunisian government doesn't step up quickly to organize new democratic elections, as requested by the UGTT, this could well degenerate into a civil war.
