Dear Friends,
We would like to thank all affiliates for your support and contribution to the work of UNI Global Union in 2012.
These are challenging times for unions. We are all engaged in a significant struggle to win new members and to improve the lives of people everywhere.
We cannot escape the judgement that we are in a very profound transformation of the world of work, with a hardening of attitudes from public policy makers and business. The troika policy in Southern Europe is breathtaking in the severity of the punishment being dealt to working people and unions. It used to be the Washington consensus that placed workers in peril; now it is structural change in labour markets.
All parts of UNI Global Union, its regions, sectors and groups, are working to stem this adverse tide.
The Breaking Through strategy is making a difference locally and in the way that we work. There is an alignment of goals to win global agreements and to organise, and we are putting our Organising Fund to excellent use. We are proud of our brilliant organising successes on all continents and particularly in Colombia.
We are now two years away from our Cape Town Congress; our theme will be “Including You” as we continue the drive for more inclusive economic growth.
We thank all affiliates for your commitment to UNI Global Union as we continue to push the boundaries of our work. Thanks to all of you who have organised, advocated for workers’ rights both at home and abroad and stood up against injustice.
The fight goes on and we know that with your support we will win and continue to Break Through for all our members.
On behalf of all UNI staff, we wish you and your families a happy holiday and a wonderful 2013.
Best wishes,
Philip Jennings
