In December 2012, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff signed into law a bill that classifies the work of private security workers as dangerous and provides added compensation to address this.



This law adds 30% pay onto current security guard salaries to compensate for dangerous work and caps off a successful 10-year campaign by UNI’s security affiliate in Brazil, the CNTV, and puts private security workers on a par with workers in other sectors where dangerousness is recognized as part of the job and appropriately compensated, such as the police. CNTV President José Boaventura described the campaign as a struggle for dignity and respect for private security workers.



Now, when the payments are due, many companies are refusing to step up. Accordingly, CNTV-CUT has called for a one-day strike on February 1, if the law is not honored. UNI Global Union supports this important and defining struggle and stands with the workers and CNTV-CUT.
