Tunisian workers from the UGTT trade union, attending a UNI Mena region workshop being held in Jendouba in the north of Tunisia, were addressed by Neil Anderson, Head of UNI SCORE and Mongi Abderahim, UNI Mena Region Coordinator, who told them that UNI Global Union would work with them to build a stronger trade union movement in Tunisia. That only by having strong unions, able to tackle the multinationals coming in to the country, could a strong and vibrant democracy be expected to be maintained in Tunisia. Strong unions working to make sure the multinationals respected workers rights and were bargaining good collective contracts were an essential element of a society that would help it's citizens to prosper and gain along with the development of the economy.



The workshop also heard about and pledged to support the Orange Telecom workers who are planning a strike on Friday 10 May to try and ensure that Orange did respect their right to negotiate a collective contract and to negotiate to maintain jobs and stop sub contracting and outsourcing of their work to temporary workers.



Sessions on how to communicate better as unions and on how UGTT had worked to help develop a stronger unified union movement were also undertaken with interventions by Nooman Gharbi and Mohamed Ben Salah from UGTT.
