Last week’s (June 25th – 26th) meeting of the Women’s Committee for UNI Americas in Buenos Aires, Argentina was a sound success. The event was hosted by the National Secretary General of La Bancaria, Sergio Palazzo and the President of UNI Americas Women, Alejandra Estoup, in the offices of the Asociacion Bancaria.
The meeting began with a report on the latest achievements of UNI, including the Bangladesh Agreement and the participation at the 57th UNCSW, as well as the current situation affecting workers and unions across the Americas. The message of the President of UNI Americas was clear: “We have to bring UNI closer to the unions and the unions closer to UNI”.
In the days that followed, the 52 participants from 9 different countries and 22 unions, discussed among other things, the current mapping of unions in the Americas, the organization of women into unions and the advantage of collective bargaining to achieve gender equality.
The action plan that was adopted is the following:
México: due to the high level of violence in this country, a workshop on violence against women and girls is planned to take place this year. At the same time, we will start to build the UNI Mexico Women’s network.
Central America: we will organise a training course on domestic violence, violence at work and collective agreements.
Caribbean: the Regional Secretary will visit the area in August to reinforce the organisation and capacity building for the affiliates.
Brazil: The liaison council will organize Workshops for UNI affiliates on September 5 and 6.
Argentina: The liaison council will organise Workshops on outsourcing and precarious work. The postal sector will do a research on gender equality clauses in the collective agreements.
