Invisibility, precariousness, low-working wages were among the most important points raised by the trade unions that participated in the first preparatory meeting for the relaunch of UNI Americas Cleaning and Maintenance sector, held in Montevideo on 22 and 23 July.



With great enthusiasm, a group of leaders from Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico and the United States undertook the task of gathering information on the sector’s situation in the region. These leaders have attempted to map the major contracting companies and the actual number of workers on the continent. Additionally, they have tracked their main problems, demands, and opportunities for strengthening unions.



"Women and migrant workers are the main protagonists of a labour force that is often invisible, but which contributes to the daily operation of companies, establishments and entire cities," said Moacyr Pereira, President of FENASCON Brazil.



"UNI Americas is aware that this sector includes the most vulnerable workers," said Adriana Rosenzvaig, Regional Secretary, adding that the region will adopt the new challenge to fight against all types of precarious work.



The first results of this research are expected to be available before the end of the year. The research will outline a strategic action plan which will accompany the existing union networks and structures which will help to organize solidarity and exchange information, .
