UNI Property Services met with the PlayFair Campaign yesterday in order to join the steering group and lend its support to the campaigns being undertaken in Russia (Winter Olympics), Brazil (World Cup 2014 and Olympics 2016), France (European Football Championships 2016) and the campaigns of various organisations in the 2022 Qatar World Cup.



Also at the meeting were two other Global Unions - IndustriALL and the BWI - the ITUC and the Clean Clothes Campaign.



The campaign will coordinate pressure on the major sporting events over employment rights, not just in the host nations but also in those places where shirts and other products are often manufactured by children, in union hostile conditions and with poverty wages. The aim is to combine with other campaigns on the abuse of people from the Lesbian and Gay communities as well as with communities who are victims of racism.



The situation in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup is particularly repulsive. Migrant Workers have their passports taken from them, trade unions are illegal and the abuse of women particularly regressive. The World Cup was awarded by FIFA to Qatar amongst widespread allegations of corruption.



Alice Dale, Head of Property Services stated that "by linking up with these other Global Unions and Campaigns we are aiming to strengthen our work against Prosegur, by showing them the kind of companies that they will be associated with and what kind of employment practices are unacceptable at these prestigious events."
