Wal-Mart workers who are members of the Commerce Trade Union of Buenos Aires, an affiliate of UNI member FAECYS of Argentina, and company representatives will meet this evening with Argentina’s Minister of Labour to discuss charges by the union that the retail multinational has a “remarkable anti-trade union policy.”



“Last weekend we suspended working activities for three hours in the Wal Mart store of Villa Pueyrredon, Buenos Aires, in protest over the anti-trade union policy that led to the dismissal of workers who attended the last trade union public demonstration. We will not accept these practices because they violate our rights as workers,” said the conflict and collective bargaining officer of the union, Oscar Nieva.



He anticipated that during this meeting they will demand “an urgent regularization of 36 working hours per week, the end of trade union delegates’ persecution and the arbitrary relocation of workers to other stores of the company.”



“Wal-Mart must understand that in our country they won’t be able to apply the slave-labour policy they apply to workers in other countries,” Nieva said. “These people must understand that in Argentina there are labour laws that were made to be accomplished and that workers have rights that are addressed also in our National Collective Agreement.”
