Indonesia’s first Tripartite Conference of Retail Sector held in Jakarta on 22nd July 2009 adopted a comprehensive joint communiqué outlining the sector’s tripartite partners’ commitment to collaborate closely in developing the Indonesian Retail Sector in an increasingly globalized economy. The Conference call upon the Ministry of Manpower “to establish a Tripartite Committee for the Indonesia retail sector to institutionalized cooperation and collaboration between the social partners in the retail sectors in the quest to develop a competitive retail sector capable of providing a good return on investments, generate decent employment and contribute to the development of the Indonesian economy and society.”



This Conference – the first of its kind - is designed to facilitate dialogue between the retail sector tripartite partners in their common endeavour to empower the Indonesian Retail Sector to become a competitive industry capable of sustainable growth for the creation of more and better jobs with decent terms and conditions of employment.

Some 100 delegates representing the management and trade unions in the retail sector and government officials participated at the Conference. The Minister of Manpower, Dr. Ir. Erman Suparno, who inaugurated the conference commended Aspek Indonesia and UNI Apro for organizing the Conference and pledge his full support to the employers and trade unions in their endeavour to develop the partnership industrial relations and training and retraining program to empower the Retail Industry.



The UNI Apro Regional Secretary in his welcoming address reiterated the need for continued and improved industrial relations between labour and management especially in this era of high competition. He also laid down the principles that both management and labour must recognize so as to strengthen such partnership industrial relations in the retail sector.



Other delegates who addressed the Conference include: Chair and Vice Chairman of Indonesia’s employers’ association, APRINDO – Mr. Sofjan Wanandi and Mr. Yudhi Komarudin, Chairman of Aspek Indonesia, Mr. Muhd. Hakim, Deputy Director of ILO, Mr. Peter van Rooij and Mr. Marius Mueller-Henning from FES Jakarta.



In recognition of the achievements that have been attained at Hero Supermarket, the Minister of Manpower presented commendation plaques to Mr. John Callaghan, CEO of Hero Supermarket and the Chairman of the Hero Union, Mr. Rusdi Salam.



UNI Apro President, Mr. Joseph de Bruyn (Secretary Treasurer, SDA Australia) gave a presentation on how the development of human capital is being institutionalized in Australia’s retail sector. Assistant General Secretary of UI Zensen, Mr. Kazuhide Hashimoto, presented the delegates an overview of the industrial relations as practised as well as highlighted the challenges in the commerce sector in Japan. UNI Apro Deputy President, Mr. Takaaki Sakurada gave his presentation of the Global Framework Agreement concluded by Takashimaya, Japan.



The Conference was organized by UNI Apro in collaboration with Aspek Indonesia and FES Germany Office in Jakarta.
