UNI Global Union today said it is standing in solidarity with the Communication Workers Union (CWU) in the United Kingdom and its members at the Royal Mail who have launched a two-day national strike this morning.



Workers authorised strike action last week. The union and Royal Mail management have not been able to reach an agreement about pay, benefits and other issues.

“We're very disappointed that despite extensive talks with the Royal Mail, the company has dismissed our offers to resolve the dispute,” Dave Ward, CWU deputy general secretary, said yesterday. “It appears, as revealed in the leaked Royal Mail document which was in the media last week, that Royal Mail has no intention of resolving this dispute. The company seems intent on sidelining the concerns of postal workers.”

The union said that after a letter from the Royal Mail managing director received on Wednesday, it had no option but to go ahead with its planned strike action for today and tomorrow. The CWU offered unconditional talks through the mediation service ACAS.
