 THE UNI Africa Executive Committee has adopted a five-point regional strategic plan which aims at growing union membership.

Regional Secretary Zakari Koudougou informed the 11th Executive Committee that met in Cairo, Egypt from 10 - 11 March that the region had set the target of increasing membership by 111 per cent by 2011.

The five key areas of actions of the UNI Africa strategic plan are:

· Organising in multinational companies

· Building strong and democratic trade unions

· Improving the work in the sectors and inter-professional groups

· Increasing the visibility of UNI Africa

· Getting the regional regulatory bodies to recognise UNI Africa.

The objectives of the strategic plan are to promote the interests of affiliates through development of strong unions, the creation of decent jobs, the fight for justice, equality, democracy and peace.

The regional strategic plan would be aligned with UNI’s “Breaking Through” project that seeks to introduce strategic planning to UNI’s global work, in the regions as well as the sectors.

Getting recognition and organising workers (GROW) is one of the key themes for the 3rd UNI World Congress scheduled for Nagasaki this November where the “UNI Breaking Through” global strategy would be adopted.
