Unions braced for global action week
Across Canada, unionists will be clad in their week of action t-shirts to ram home the message that workers’ rights should be respected.
Some 50 employees, represented by the Canadian Auto Workers union, in each of DHL’s eight major facilities in Canada have said they would all wear the t-shirt in front of a DHL truck or sign at the same time on the same day. The action will be part of an ITF global action week running from 6 to 12 October.
Verdi unionists in Germany are also among the unions that have pledged to carry out activities. Their actions include events to highlight the importance of a global framework agreement for DHL as well as all other global delivery companies. Meanwhile, in Mali, the aviation union Syndicat Autonome des Travailleurs de l’Aéronautique Civile, is planning a public awareness campaign to support DHL workers.
In addition, representatives from UNI global union, which is involved in organising the DHL Respect part of the global action week with the ITF, will be attending a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland on quality public services. They will be joined by 40 postal workers from around the world, among them those employed in global delivery companies.
During the week, Norwegian, Finnish and Danish postal unions will be attending the World PostExpo in Copenhagen, Denmark, to highlight the need for proper global agreements to ensure workers’ rights are respected. It is unacceptable that some global delivery companies are violating workers’ rights, they will tell delegates.
