Our Japanese colleagues have sent the following message concerning the massive earthquake and Tsunami which has devastated Northern Japan and cost many thousands of lives of postal workers.
"As you know, a massive earthquake of magnitude of 9.0 occurred Friday 11 March, off the Pacific coast of the north eastern and north Kanto region of the Japanese main land, causing devastating damages. The Japan Meteorological Agency named this earthquake "The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake." Not only an earthquake, but also a massive Tsunami attacked the area. Many people suffered from both natural calamities. Death toll is going up every day, at this moment around 10,000.
Most unions are affected by massive Tsunami and earthquake, because they have branches in the northern east and north Kanto region of Japan. But they try to gather any kind of information on their missing members.
The Japanese postal workers union, JPGU, are trying to get the information on their missing members and their family members, because they want to know how many members are affected. Usually, Japanese unions can get such information very quickly, but it is extremely difficult in the midst of the devastation. JPGU have a lot of members in the affected region. Even companies can’t get the full list of employees, who are missing, because post offices are wiped out.
UNI Post & Logistics sends our heartfelt messages of support and concern for the workers and their families in such a time of crisis and tragedy and will find any way possible to support the Japanese colleagues.
