UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings said he was saddened at news of the death of President Chavez, “In a generation we have seen a transformation of Latin America, democracy has won and the long fight against inequality and poverty has begun. Hugo Chavez was a champion of the new Latin America agenda and we mourn his loss.”



UNI Americas Regional Secretary Adriana Rosenzvaig added, “We send our heart felt sympathies to our Venezuelan brothers and sisters. Now is a time of mourning for all of Latin America. We will continue the peaceful struggle for equality and justice both economic and political that President Chavez championed during his lifetime. UNI stands with the people of Venezuela.”



Hugo Chavez inspired a left-wing revival across Latin America. In Venezuela, he used the country’s oil wealth to fund educational and social programmes to help the poor and the disadvantaged.
