Trade unions call on IFIs to support recovery through stronger labour market institutions and increased public investment

In advance of the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, scheduled to start in Washington this Friday, the ITUC and its Global Unions partner organisations call on the international financial institutions (IFIs) to support a vigorous and coordinated strategy of public investment in services and infrastructure and strengthening of labour market institutions to secure wage growth.

On September 22-23, Christina Colclough, UNI Global Union’s Senior Advisor on digitalisation, participated at a ILO technical workshop on Decent Work in the On-Demand Economy.

The 30 researchers and experts from countries spanning from Korea across to the United States discussed the various types of platforms, the working conditions in the on-demand economy, the legal debates surrounding employee rights and employer duties, and finally policies to improve the working conditions and social protection coverage for on-demand economy workers.

“I just don’t get it. On the one hand governments across the world are currently negotiating and implementing post-crisis regulation aimed at preventing another financial crisis of the 2008 magnitude. On the other hand, these very same governments are negotiating, behind closed doors, the TiSA agreement, which will roll back financial regulation, remove safeguards against new and risky financial services and products, and liberalise the finance sector like never before. It doesn’t make sense.”
