Thanks to the generosity of UNI affiliates and donors, the UNI Nepal Liaison Council has carried out two food relief distributions to the affected people of Lalipur District, Godwary, Patlechhap, Kavre Distirct, Thulagaun and Tinghare.
UNI staff and affiliates on the ground in Nepal are joining forces to respond to the quake which led to the deaths of thousands of people, injured thousands more and destroyed buildings and infrastructure.
In a video sent from the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, the President of UNI NLC member the Union of Private Hospital and Healthcare Workers in Nepal said:
“As a responsible trade union we are going to organise free medical care in one of the remote areas in Nepal where people are suffering and people do not have basic medicine.
“We ask all our members to contribute to these humanitarian activities and we also request UNI NLC international trade unions to support and organise help for us.”
Money from a joint fundraising campaign by UNI Global Union and Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA is being used to deliver medical supplies to affected families.
Shankar Lamichhane, President of the UNI Nepal Liaison Council said:
“We are in immense grief due to loss of lives and livelihood. Many of the deceased and injured are working class. In this devastating situation, we are thankful for the national and international solidarity and encouragement we receive that helps to build up the strength to cope with the challenges.”

Its unions include medical unions with direct links to the private hospitals in Kathmandu and outside of Kathmandu, are planning a free health camp and the UNI NLC is going to purchase and supply medical supplies to the free health camp.
Nepal is one of the world’s poorest countries and its capital Kathmandu is extremely densely populated. Even before the earthquake half of Nepal’s 28 million populations did not have access to proper sanitation and lived below the poverty line.
