Workers at Metro Cash and Carry stores in Pakistan recently won recognition of their union and reemployment of several dismissed union leaders thanks to an agreement worked out with UNI Global Union, Metro Group and Metro Pakistan management.

In January of 2014 Metro Group and UNI Global Union signed a Joint Statement reinforcing the principles of fair work, labor rights and collective bargaining that both organizations believe in. The statement also created a process for both parties to resolve disputes around labor rights issues.

“This is a practical example of global unions and global businesses resolving problems amicably without disruption to business or the lives of workers,” said UNI Global Union’s General Secretary Philip Jennings. “Global Agreements between businesses and global unions represent the way forward for  global labour relations,” he added.

Metro Group operates 9 stores in Pakistan with approximately 2400 non-management personnel. The union continues to recruit new members and will soon begin negotiations for a collective agreement.
