UNI Global Union general secretary, Philip Jennings, has told CNBC that economic inequality is proving dysfunctional for economies, businesses and people.

Speaking to press at the OECD Forum in Paris this week, the UNI chief warned that something is "fundamentally wrong" for working people and called for more collective bargaining for higher wages.

Jennings said he was pleased to learn that the OECD is waking up to the idea of inclusion, and that "the centre of gravity - of economic analysis and thinking seems to be shifting." He challenged leaders assembled at the OECD to translate this thinking into economic policy.

In an earlier interview, Jennings told Bloomberg that the world needed a "new deal" at work. "We are seeing record levels of income inequality and unemployment," he said. "We will not realise the objective of inclusive economies with a continuation of the unfairness in the distribution of the income that we see today in both the developed and the developing world.”
