UNI Europa and the ETUC are united in calling for the Greek people not to be penalised for voting against austerity. The EU must react by backing a workable debt rescheduling and debt relief system. 

UNI Europa Regional Secretary Oliver Roethig said, “The Eurogroup must work out a solution as quickly as possible so that the Greek crisis doesn’t spiral out of control even more. EU leaders have a political and moral obligation not to push Greece out of the Eurozone – this would endanger the European Union project as a whole.”

European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) General Secretary Bernadette Ségol said, "EU leaders have an historic responsibility to find a sensible compromise. The decision should not be a technical one or left to the ECB, it must be a political decision. We are at a turning point in EU history. The EU should think hard and long before pushing Greece out of the Eurozone. Now is the moment to show what it means to have a European Union.”

UNI Global Union General Secretary, Philip Jennings, returning from a visit to affiliates in Latin America said, “Latin America has a clear message for Greece – IMF structural adjustment meant a ‘lost decade’ for young people there. Greece is already well down that path but deserves a second chance. The EU has a responsibility to take a lead and find a new way so that Greece has a chance to rebuild its shattered economy.”
