UNI Global Union condemns police raids and arrest of Anne Krueger in the Philippines

UNI strongly condemns the arrest and detention of 57 members of labor and civil society organisations in the Philippines in the evening of the 31st of October. Included in the arrests was Mary-Anne Krueger (known as Anne) who is an organiser for the contact centre workers’ association BIEN in the city of Bacolod. Anne and BIEN have been active in working with UNI Global Union in the Filipino contact centre sector.

All in for workers – UNI Gaming global conference gets rolling in Macau

The UNI Gaming global conference got underway this week as nearly ninety trade union leaders from 20 countries met in Macau. Macau is often dubbed the “gaming hub of the world”, with a whopping 25 % of its 400,000 employed population working in the gaming industry.

“Our global conference here in Macau opens a new page in the development of the sector,” said Head of UNI Gaming Giedre Lelyte. “We’ve been trying to organise casino workers in this major gaming destination for years.”

Argentinian people vote for shared prosperity, reject neoliberal agenda

"We're going to enter the world with dignity. The government is back in the hands of the people!" said Alberto Fernández after he handily defeated incumbent Argentinian president Mauricio Macri on Sunday.

 

The election of Fernández and vice president elect Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, running on the Frente de Todos slate, was a clear refutation of Macri’s neoliberal, anti-labor agenda.

UNI Finance -- organizing strong unions to tackle the changing world of work

At the UNI Finance Conference in Torremolinos, over 400 union activists and delegates exchanged their local and international experiences of the changing world of work and the challenges facing workers and unions. Digitalisation and AI are reshaping the way we work, and the finance sector has been one of the first to feel the changes. Delegates heard stories from unions all over the world about how they are facing up to  both the issues, and the opportunities presented by a rapidly changing world of work.

UNI stands with the Chilean people in the face of violent repression

UNI Global Union is calling on the Chilean government to end its lethal and immoral campaign of repression against social protesters.

A proposed increase to subway fares sparked discontent that, last week, exploded into widespread unrest in the country.

Since last Friday, 18 protestors have been killed, hundreds more injured, and thousands arrested. President Sebastian Piñera has extended a state of emergency and imposed a curfew.

Global agreements: the foundation for building strong finance unions

Over 400 union activists from 72 countries kicked off the UNI Finance Global Conference in Torremolinos, Spain, with an in-depth discussion of using global agreements (GAs) as a foundation for building strong unions and worker power. Participants included leaders from UNI Global Union as well as high level management from UniCredit, Crédit Agricole and BNP Paribas, all recent signatories  of ground breaking  agreements with UNI.

Forward together — UNI Europa Commerce ready to organise

In Bucharest this week, UNI Europa Commerce endorsed an ambitious four-year plan to organise workers around Europe. Under the new leadership of Handels’ Susanna Gideonsson, the commerce sector will move forward with a strong commitment to organizing commerce workers and building power. The Conference unanimously adopted an action plan aimed at growing union power and influence in Europe. The new Swedish President Gideonsson emphasised a strong focus on youth as a priority for a growing sector.
