| Our time is now. Life doesn’t wait. There is no time to wait. It is time for our generation to find its place and raise its voice. To make clear that this country is not doing right by us but that we have no intention of abandoning it, especially to the hands of those who are degrading it. We are the great resource of this country. And yet this country exploits us. Without us tens of thousands of businesses and public services, universities and professional practices would have no one to make the scapegoat in this time of economic crisis. We are a generation on the margins: without work, underpaid, and forced to do unrecognized and free work, condemned to a lengthy dependence on our parents. The precariousness of our situation and absence of rights is a way of life: from the right to study to the right to a home, from the income to the health, to the possibility of achieving our own happiness—especially for young women, on whom weighs the especially challenging balance of work and personal life. We can no longer live in a country so deeply unjust. Watching the spectacle of our lives unproductively spent in struggle, the disappointment of our hopes, the abandonment of our homeland in search of opportunities and security that do not exist in Italy, is no longer tolerable, just as the special privileges and inequalities that make it impossible to realize our potential are no longer tolerable. There is no more time to merely resist; we must take action, a unified action, because by now the illusion of individual success is shattered. We must define ourselves rather than let others define us. We must live, not just survive, stand together, not alone. We want a whole different country. No more slaves of “recommendations” and cronyism. We want a country where everyone has an opportunity to study, to work, to invent. We want a country that invests in research, that values our talents and our motivation, that economically supports those who lose their job, are seeking another and are unable to find one, who take a chance on new and ambitious ideas, who believe in personal development. We want a country that is truly a part of Europe. We are tired of this unsustainable life, but we choose to stay in Italy. This manifesto is a call to everyone to come to the square: to those who have uncertain and unpaid work, those who are unable to pay their rent, those who are tired of asking their parents for support, those who are unable to obtain loans, those who are unable to find work and have to go from one internship to another, those who study and those who are no longer able to study, the students who have shaken up Italy, and to all those who are fortunate to have permanent work but are forced by economic circumstances to support their adult children. We ask all those who are willing to seize this moment, to take a chance not only on the future, but on the present, and who are willing to do it now. |
