On 6-7 November, 500 women affiliated to UNI held the 3rd UNI World Women’s Conference in Nagasaki, Japan to debate the future of female workers. UNI World Women’s Committee submitted four motions, which were unanimously passed by the Conference. The subjects of the motions were as follow: - UNI Equal Opportunities Strategic Priorities These strategic priorities and their related goals will form the basis of a strategic action plan for UNI Equal Opportunities over the next four years. The priorities and goals for the group were identified based on UNI Breaking Through Strategic Objectives and the Motion on Breaking Through on Women’s Representation in UNI Global Union proposed for adoption by the 3rd UNI World Congress. Verónica Fernández Méndez, Head of UNI Equal Opportunities gave an overview of the four-year plan and its implementation. - The Global Financial Crisis and its Impact on Women This motion looks at how the global financial crisis has affected women workers, and how UNI and its affiliates may improve the situation by, for example, promoting permanent employment or supporting, through collective bargaining, provisions to improve women’s employability and improve their ability to return to employment. This motion was introduced by Deise Recoaro from CONTRAF-CUT, Brazil. - The Use of Women as Weapons of War Just before the start of the 16 days of activism, UNI and its affiliates showed their commitment to fight violence against women once again by unanimously endorsing this motion. The subject was introduced by Louise Mukonkole from SYNCASS, Congo DR. She gave a very powerful and moving presentation on the systematic rape of women in the Democratic Republic of Congo. - Migration and Trafficking of Women This document outlines measures to improve the situation of migrant workers, especially women, who remain marginalised, and that of women victims of trafficking. The topic was introduced by Alice Chang, UNI asia & pacific Commerce Director. The introductions to the motions by the key speakers, as well as the welcome speech by Maxine Gay, UNI asia & pacific Women’s President, can be downloaded in “Related Files”.
