What do YOUth have to say on World Day for Decent Work?
This is the 11th UNI-LCJ youth English camp - "Breaking Through for Global Solidarity", 6-9 October 2011.
5 unions,16 participants got together in Okinawa. The aim of this camp is to learn about global union movement by using English
and to make friends with other unionists. Last night, when we met for the first time, everyone looked very nervous and was afraid of
speaking English, but after drinking,we are more relaxed and tried to speak in English.
Today, after the orientation,we learnt about "UNI and UNI Apro" by Sister Magdalene Kong. She explained about UNI structure,
presence, sectors, groups of UNI, and UNI Apro activities.
One of the participants asked her "What is the one main problem that trade unions face today?" She answered precarious work.
We learned about UNI-PLC Youth activities in the Philippines from Cyril.
One of their activities is helping to improve lives of street children. The children who are living in Payatas area cannot go to
school or eat enough and have to through garbage. That is too awful!
UNI-PLC Youth helps the street children in Gift Giving Program and a Feeding Program. In the fututre,we hope every child can
have enough food, receive education and choose a future that they like.
We then listened to the life of Sister Marlar Sabado,UNI-PLC Woman President.
We learnt how important freedom and democracy is. In Burma, people do not enjoy those rights.
We have to appreciate how lucky we are in Japan.
We have democracy and freedom of religion, marriage, speech and others.
In a group work 1,we introduced our unions to each other in English.
We discussed about a number of topics, such as our union name, the number of union members, organization rate, percentage
of women members and percentage of youth members. After that, we presented our unions in front of our friends.
That was a good chance to know each other.
Have you heard about DECENT WORK?
Decent work is an important message for trade unions.
That is work which protects human and workers rights and where fair salary are provided.
Today (7 October) is World Day for Decent Work and we talked about decent work.
After discussion about what decent work is, we came up with slogans of decent work.
Together, we can achieve decent work!
