Today Walmart workers across the US strike all day, standing up against Walmart’s retaliation against employees who speak out. They also will caravan to Bentonville, Arkansas, on what they are calling the “Ride for Respect”, to bring their complaints and concerns directly to the Walmart shareholder meeting on June 7. “We at UNI Global Union fully support Walmart employees and this day of action,” said Alke Bossinger, Head of UNI Commerce. “We encourage you to sign this petition out of solidarity and for a positive change.”
Walmart employees who have spoken up for their rights saw their hours and shifts reduced, no salary raises and, in some cases, even lost their jobs.
This happened to Vanessa Ferreira, who, after working for Walmart for 8 years, was fired from her job earlier this month for standing up for herself and her co-workers. Another Walmart employee of 17 years, Carlton Smith, from Paramount, California, also lost his job for speaking up to make positive change.
Employees have been calling on Walmart to publicly commit to offering full-time hours and a minimum salary of $25,000 and this is why your support is so important.
Despite making more than $16 billion in profits each year, Walmart is creating jobs that keep its workers without enough hours, without healthcare, and struggling to get by on poverty wages. As a result many employees can’t even support their families without relying on government assistance, while the Walton family, which controls the company, has the wealth of 42 percent of American families combined, and its CEO rakes in more than 1,000 times the salary of the average Walmart worker.
The “Ride for Respect” is a huge effort with the aim of taking staff’s concerns directly to the executives and shareholders who could make change happen.
