Uruguay: UNI-Prosegur Workers’ Alliance
Montevideo. With the aim of achieving the signature of a Global Agreement with the Spanish Multinational Prosegur, which provides private security services, a delegation composed of representatives of the Federación Estatal de Actividades Diversas (State Federation of Diverse Activities) (CC.OO), the Federación de Trabajadores de Seguridad Privada (Private Security Federation of Workers) (FTSP-USO), the Federación de Servicios (Services Federation) (FES, UGT) visited Uruguay and UNI Global Union Property Services joined a series of activities in relation to the roundtable discussions about the new wage scales in the Uruguayan private security industry . In fact, after pickets, mobilisations and a series of meetings held between several union organisations of the sector, Uruguayan private security workers decided to sign an agreement with the union that joins the industry’s companies, of which Prosegur is a member. On the other hand, the delegation of UNI-Prosegur Workers’ Alliance went round several work-sites where the company operates. The idea was to make an “in situ” observation of the conditions in which thousands of people develop their daily duties, in an economic activity that generally presents great precarity and a low level of respect towards workers’ rights, generally considered in the national legal regulations, but turned into a dead letter. In Prosegur’s case, UNI Global Union has created a strategy that seeks to overcome these difficulties and strongly believes that the signature of a Global Agreement with the mentioned company can significantly contribute to guarantee that all the workers shall be able to exercise the right to organise themselves in unions, and collectively negotiate agreements in relation to their working conditions, in any country in which Prosegur operates.
