Verizon will cut 8,000 jobs from its wireline business by the end of 2009, including both direct employees and contractors. The company currently employs 235,000 people, not including contractors.



Previously, the company has cut jobs from the more expensive and less profitable wireline business while hiring in its growing wireless business. This time, the company has said it will not start hiring in wireless until the recession is over.
