The UNI World Executive Board expressed its total solidarity with UMT representatives in Moroccan contact centres after they were sacked by Acticall-Sitel, Free and Altice-SFR. The three companies have sacked 16 elected UMT union representatives in the last six months, without the approval of Moroccan authorities are required by law, showing a disregard for the human and labour rights of their workers.

“We call on our affiliates to support a campaign against these three companies to reinstate the union representatives,” said UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings. “We call upon the Moroccan government to uphold their responsibilities and guarantee the unrestricted exercise of trade union freedoms and respect the rights of workers in accordance with the Consitution, labour legislation and international conventions.”

“This race to the bottom cannot continue, Moroccan union workers must enjoy the basic human and labour rights that they are entitled to.”

UNI believes that the dismissals of the 16 trade union representatives is a systematic attempt to counter UMT’s organising push in Moroccan call centres.

Head of UNI ICTS, Alke Boessiger, said, “It is completely unacceptable that merely being a part of a union is enough to lose workers their job at these call-centre companies.”

“The Moroccan Labour code is clear in its protections for elected representatives, and these companies are flouting these codes. We demand that all workers are immediately reinstated and receive their salary payments for the periods for which they were unlawfully dismissed.”
