Unions rally Berlaymont for a fair sales policy on financial products

Service Unions Rally Berlaymont:
For a fair sales-policy on financial products
The employees in the financial sector wish to be able to sell “fair and transparent” financial products. The financial crisis, and its consequences, showed that the financial markets can evolve fast… What was considered a safe product yesterday, can turn into something completely different tomorrow.
The employees of the sector want to have a clear conscience while they are giving sales advice. However, this can only happen if the employer and the company-rules permit it. Too often, this is not sufficiently the case: the pressure to reach imposed quota (and bonuses) is high, training is lacking.
Employers want to follow this training in order to dispose of accurate knowledge of all financial products they are asked to sell. In each corporation a negotiation on the sales and advice-policy should take place with the workers representation, along with other stakeholders.
The European Unions of the Financial sector, united in UNI Finance, recently decided to make it one of their goals to organize ‘sales and advice’ more efficiently.
Within this international context, the Belgian unions are setting up a demonstration in front of the entrance of the Berlaymont building. All over the world employees demand to be able to give financial advice and sell products in a proper, transparent and honest way. In the long run employees, customers and the economy itself can only benefit from it.
A UNI declaration, consisting of 12 clear demands, has been made, which we will handed over to the European Commission on Monday. The same demands were also delivered to the European Central Bank in Frankfurt.
You will find the declaration enclosed.
