Victimization of democratically elected trade union leaders, and subjecting them to various forms of harassments by the management of Peoples’ Bank in Sri Lanka heightens.

The People’s Bank management suspended the services of the President of the branch union; Shantha Gangabadage and seven trade union officials today, framing unfounded allegations in order to harass the union officials.   

Over 7000 members of CBEU People’s Bank branch launched a “BLACK BAND” solidarity trade union campaign across the island with effect from 13th December 2017, denouncing the harassment and victimization meted on their union leaders. CBEU is launching the solidarity campaign, withdrawing all voluntary cooperation extended by their members, including working on weekends, extra hours of work during the legitimate breaks forcing the management of People’s Bank to respect trade union rights in the bank. 

T  G W Gunawardana, President of Ceylon Bank Employees’ Union [CBEU] solicited solidarity support from UNI Apro to strengthen their campaign against the hostilities of the Peoples’ Bank management. Christopher Ng, Regional Secretary wrote to the Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Finance in Sri Lanka requesting his intervention to resolve the issues through dialogue and discussion, assuring the UNI Global Union’s solidarity with  CBEU to secure legitimate trade union rights at People’s Bank, in Sri Lanka.
