“We are relieved that our colleagues have been released from detention but we renew our call to the government to come to the bargaining table in good faith with the Independent Union of Telecom Workers of Egypt,” said UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings.



UNI believes the release is a result of the power of the Telecom Egypt workers’ solidarity, which has held strong on the picket line for nearly a month. UNI was on the line with the workers on the first day of the strike and has vowed to keep up the global solidarity until the workers’ demands on a number of issues related to decent working conditions and trade union rights are met.

The release of the workers comes as the union holds a huge demonstration this afternoon in front of the company’s headquarters in Cairo and just a day after UNI sent a message to Egypt's Prime Minister Essem Sharaf calling on him to ensure the rights of striking Telecom Egypt workers who are under intense pressure from company bosses and the government.

UNI has asked that Minister of Manpower Mr. Ahmed Hassan Bori, who has been a progressive voice in labour matters, be given a central role to mediate the end of this conflict.
