UNI Global Union paid tribute to Aung San Suu Kyi for her courage which has driven a new wave of democracy across Myanmar. Her NLD party swept to victory in the country’s elections. The results are due to be confirmed later this week.



Philip Jennings, General Secretary of UNI, said unions would continue to show their support and work to create a better future for workers in Myanmar



“Unions around the world stood shoulder to shoulder to support the economic boycott of Myanmar which helped bring about democratic change. Aung San Suu Kyi has marked a generation with her suffering and determination. She never gave up hope and must now be free from fear to build a new Myanmar.”



Jennings said Myanmar was the latest in a wave of democracy flooding the world but warned that global businesses would have to be made to act responsibly as the country would become a big investment opportunity.



“A year ago we had the Arab Spring now we have another chance to continue the democratic wave in Myanmar. Global businesses are forming a long line to invest in the new Myanmar. The nation is full of promise but it must not become another businessman’s paradise. Let’s have justice for all and work to bolster Aung San Suu Kyi’s democratic movement.”



UNI APRO Executive Board which is meeting in Singapore also welcomed the results and underlined that UNI is committed to growing the unions in Myanmar.



Jennings concluded, “We have a fantastic new challenge in Myanmar and one that we wholly intend to meet.”
