On 19 September 2014, from 8 30 to 1215, UNI Global Union will host the 5th annual edition of the “Et Maintenant?” forum. Et Maintenant is a yearly event to discuss the issues and questions surrounding the Lac Leman region of Switzerland. This year’s theme will be Nyon in 2030. What will the region look like? What will the housing situation be? What will the labour market look like? Will the quality of life change?

Mr Pierre-Yves Maillard, President of the Council of Vaud, Mr Tibère Adler, Director of “Avenir Suisse”, in addition to contributions from diverse members of civil society will attempt to answer these questions at the “Et Maintenant?” forum.

Between 2010 and 2030, the growth in population of the Nyon district, will be far more significant than that of Lausanne, Morges, or West Lausanne.

According to projections, there will be a need to accommodate almost 30,000 people and 15,000 new homes, mostly for the elderly. Young people aged between 20 and 35 are likely to live elsewhere due to the high prices of rent in the Nyon area.

A huge increase in the 65 + demographic is also predicted between 2014 and 2030. In 2030, the elderly population is projected to be over 20 % compared to 11 % in 2000. Additionally, the number of people aged 80 or over living in the Nyon district is predicted to triple by 2030.

At the “Et Maintenant” press conference, UNI Global Union general secretary Philip Jennings said, “Today, we live in a complex world that is constantly changing. With a growing global and regional population, ageing populations, urbanization, global warming and technological revolutions in the world of work, we need to prepare for the future on a regional scale as well as global.”

Daniel Rossellat, the mayor of Nyon said “We chose a long term theme. With Nyon 2030, we can take the time to stop and ask: “Where are we going as a district? How can we adapt to respond to the needs of both young and elderly people?” These are the questions we hope to answer at the Et Maintenant Forum.”
