UNI Global Union is organizing international support for colleagues in Chile who are now dealing with the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that hit the country last Saturday.



The UNI Americas regional office has closely monitored the situation in Chile, corresponding with affiliates to make sure that union officials and members are safe and assessing the needs of unions and communities to recover and rebuild.



UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings has pledged the support of the global organisation to the rebuilding efforts and will be sending support from unions around the world as well as a generous donation from UNI to communities in need.



Outside of Chile, UNI affiliates around the world are already gathering solidarity funds to send to their colleagues in need. UNI Americas will open a special account to collect and distribute the funds.



The UNI head office in Nyon has been in daily contact with UNI Americas Regional Secretary Raul Requena, who is from Chile and was in the country when the earthquake happened.



“In this time of great need, we stand in solidarity with our colleagues and all the people of Chile,” said UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings. “We offer committed global support for the strong unions and vibrant communities of Chile as they rebuild.”



UNI is working with local leaders and the international union movement to find the best way to get support to local people and to unions and union members. It will soon send out information for individuals and organizations wishing to make donations.
