America Movil management’s push for derecognition at CTE-America Movil was unethical and illegal under Salvadoran law, which says that only union members can dissolve a union. The union can be derecognised if its membership falls below 35 people for more than a year but that is not the case for either union.



UNI Americas Regional Secretary Adriana Rosenzvaig is demanding El Salvador’s Labour Minister Humberto Centeno withdraw the decision to dissolve SITCOM and SITRAVX and reinstate the unions immediately.



“This is an attack on trade unions in El Salvador that must be remedied immediately,” Rosenzvaig said. “There is no basis to dissolve the union legally so the company has resorted to pulling strings in the government. The company has engaged in a brutal anti-union campaign and when that failed to scare off the workers, it resorted to manipulating the government. ”



This illegal disbanding of the union comes after the company engaged in a long-running attack campaign on union members and union leaders. This week UNI joined SITCOM, Mexican trade union centre UNT, Mexican telecom union STRM and the Federación Enrrique Schmidt Cuadra (FESC) in filing a complaint with the Mexican government about America Movil’s anti-union attacks in El Salvador, Nicaragua and Guatemala under the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.
