In cooperation with the Global Day of Action organized by SEIU and UNI, UNI-LCJ and IUF-JCC organized joint actions.

On 17 July, staff of UNI-LCJ and IUF-JCC passed out a leaflet disclosing the ugly face of KKR, which stresses their long-term investment policy in Japan. The leafleting was organized in front of the KKR head office in Tokyo.

In order to raise awareness of a dangerous nature of private equity among trade unionists, UNI-LCJ and IUF-JCC jointly held a seminar titled “Take Back the Economy: Global Day of Action Against Buyout Funds” in Tokyo on 18 July 2008. Bro. Takaaki Sakurada, President of UNI-LCJ, opened the meeting and introduced the meaning of the Global Day of Action and a nature of KKR. Bro. Ojima, Executive Director of Department of Economic and Social Policy, JTUC-Rengo, hailed the initiatives of UNI and IUF in Japanese context. Professor Uemura, Dean of the school of law of Waseda University, was invited to the meeting. He highlighted loopholes in Japanese corporate laws and explained how Japan is targeted by buyout funds. He emphasized the important role of trade unions in the process of M&As, especially those involving private equity firms. Bro. Takahashi, Researcher of JAM (Japanese Association of Metal, Machinery, and Manufacturing Workers) introduced the results of a survey on PE activities in manufacturing industry conducted by JAM. Around 80 participants, including journalists were intently listening to presentations and discussing on situation in Japan.
