The decision of Rio Tinto to sell its packaging business to both Bemis and Amcor will have significant impact on workers across all their operations.



Changes of this size will undoubtedly mean restructures across the operations and the potential for job losses. We only need to remember the last round of acquisitions that Amcor was involved in and the plant closures that occurred, to realise that workers future job security is at risk.



We need to consider what options are available to us to ensure that we maintain and strengthen our networks in Alcan, Amcor and start to develop our Union presence at Bemis.



Mapping of these companies to identify where our strengths are is critical to us in preparing our strategies going forward.



We have written to the CEO of Amcor seeking a meeting as a matter of urgency to discuss the impact of the acquisition on both the existing plants within the current operations of Amcor as well as the impact on the Alcan operations.



Some years ago we established a network within Amcor. As part of our considerations we need to give serious thought to reactivating this working group.



UNI Graphical Global Union is going to organize a joint meeting with the Unions that represent workers in AMCOR, ALCAN and Bemis.



Our message is clear: workers and union rights should be respected.
