13/10/2008 - In a circular to all its affiliates, UNI's General Secretary, Philip Jennings, sets out the global union's approach to address the financial crisis. The key objective for trade unions is to have a seat in the reform process that will follow up the crisis.



In the context of the global financial crisis, some of the key issues for UNI Global Union are:



1. Giving stakeholders, including unions, a seat at the table in the reform process. We are working on a media campaign to get the message across.

2. Stronger social dimension to globalisation, from organising to recognition rights, to social safety nets, to global framework agreements.

3. Global initiatives on employment, jobs, income distribution and protection of pensions.

4. Global regulatory and supervisory changes – from prudential rules, deposit protection schemes, co-ordination of central banks interventions.

5. Subordinating financial markets to the real economy not vice versa.

6. Changing jobs in the finance industry back from aggressive salespersons model to giving qualitative advice. We need to develop a new approach to the roles of banks in a global economy.

These issues will be addressed through a series of meetings and conferences as well as other global union activities.
