The UNI Global Union Breaking Through Awards 2010
The UNI Global Union Breaking Through Awards are in recognition of outstanding organizing success by a UNI affiliate to meet the organizing objectives of the UNI Global Union Breaking Through strategy.
The Awards are presented annually at a ceremony organized either at the UNI World Congress in Congress years or at the World Executive Board meeting in non Congress years.
The first UNI Global Union Breaking Through Awards were presented during the UNI World Congress in Nagasaki in November 2010.

Sindicato de Telefonistas de la República Mexicana - STRM, Mexico
For launching one of the largest organizing drives in the telecom sector globally to organize more than 20,000 Telefonica Attento workers into an independent union. The workers have endured threats of violence, firings, all sanctioned by a hostile local management and unfair labour laws. They persevered to hold an election in July. The vote went against them but the union is readying a further attempt.
FNV Bondgenoten, Netherlands
For their remarkable victory for Dutch cleaners. Their campaign and bold strike action over nine weeks, with strong union leadership and tremendous worker resolve, galvanized public support and led to a 3.5 percent wage increase, better treatment and more respect for cleaners. The union and employers are now working together on an agreement about responsible contracting and to fund skills development for union representatives at the workplace.

For their relentless uphill struggle to raise trade union awareness among workers in the services sector and their outstanding organizing successes in the retail and services sectors, in particular in the formation of 14 new unions in the commerce sector under the umbrella UNICOME.
South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers’ Union - SACCAWU, South Africa’s Shoprite Shopstewards
For their strong and successful grassroots’ campaign, working with rank and file members in other African countries, that led to the signature of a Global Agreement between UNI Global Union and Shoprite, opening the doors to building strong unions throughout the company.
