Members of the UNI Graphical & Packaging Sectoral Committee met in Madrid earlier last week to finalise preparations for the 2011 Global Conference which will be held in Paris in June.



The meeting expressed its deep condolences to our brothers and sisters in Japan who are suffering as a result of the earthquake and tsunami and now the constant fear of a nuclear catastrophe.



The Sectoral Committee discussed proposed changes which would be placed before the World Conference and which are designed to ensure that all meetings which are required under the statutes have a focus on organising and are not simply meetings for meetings sake.



There have been huge changes within the graphical and packaging industries and the impact on working people throughout the regions has been massive.



The increase in precarious employment and the loss of job security is having a major effect on the lives of our members and the Sectoral Committee is committed to developing strategies for the Sector which help affiliates continue to organise and campaign for better working conditions, improved collective agreements and the right to organise free from intimidation.



There was also support for the ongoing pursuit of freedom and democracy in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and the meeting expressed its condemnation on the use of violence against the people.
