Following two years of difficult negotiations, the European Parliament has adopted the compromise on the EU telecom package in its Strasbourg plenary session. Prior to the vote, the Council of Ministers had already approved the outcome of the conciliation on 20 November 2009.





UNI europa welcomes the vote of the European Parliament, as the new telecom regulation will have an important impact on employment in Europe. It is crucial regarding workers’ rights and the importance of investment in high-speed internet as a major factor for economic growth and employment in times of economic recession.



Thus concluding the conciliation between Parliament and Council, the new telecom regulation will enter into force with publication in the EU’s Official Journal (December 2009). The next step will be the transposition of the telecom regulation into national legislation in the 27 EU Member states by June 2011.
