The trade union movement, in cooperation with civil society and some governments, has achieved substantial progress with regard to the content of CETA. However, the current agreement still does not meet red lines that UNI Europa has formulated. Accordingly, the UNI Europa Executive Committee, meeting on 1 December 2016, stressed that UNI Europa upholds its position of opposing CETA. Being supportive of free trade, UNI Europa encourages the contracting parties to reopen the negotiations to achieve a trade agreement that provides a gold standard for world trade, with binding and enforceable labour and social standards, serving citizens and workers first rather than big multinational companies.

Together with the ITUC, ETUC and the entire civil society movement, UNI Europa strives to develop a concrete framework for progressive, fair, social and sustainable international trade agreements. UNI Europa co-signed, together with 450 other European and International trade unions and public interest groups, an open letter to European and Canadian legislators, urging them to vote against CETA in its current form.
