Today UNI-Europa submitted the response to the European Commission's consultation on sectoral social dialogue. UNI-Europa highlights the crucial importance of social dialogue in building trust between trade unions and employers and in order to find balanced solutions to social problems and to develop social cohesion at European and national level.



UNI-Europa also deplores the lack of willingness of employers in certain sectors to have constructive discussions. Furthermore UNI-Europa underlines that the Commission should:

• Explicitly confront employers with their responsibility: if employers have no mandate for a specific social dialogue subject, discussions are irrelevant. In the absence of such a mandate, the Commission should hold discussion with the relevant organisation(s) on the way to proceed. This could have as a consequence the suspension of the social partner status for a period of time.
  
• Be more pro-active in promoting the social dialogue where it does not exist.
  
• Help the social partners to link up with other DGs, and be heard by other DGs.
  
• Promote the results of the social dialogue directly towards member states.
  
• Remind governments that social partnership is an essential element of the European social model.
