UNI has called for the cancellation of the mockery of a Presidential election being played out in Zimbabwe. UNI has called for Free elections.



In a letter addressed to representatives of the Zimbabwe government in Switzerland and Germany UNI DGS, Philip Bowyer said the situation in Zimbabwe is truly tragic. For those of us who long supported those fighting to end white rule in Zimbabwe it is frightening to find the current President using the same language as used by Ian Smith.



Ian Smith once said that there would be 'no black majority rule in my lifetime or of my children.' Mr. Mugabe now says 'only God' can remove him from power. Both show a total disregard for democracy and the rights of the Zimbabwe people to choose their own leaders.



A reign of terror, beatings and killings was unleashed in the last few months to frighten the Zimbabwe people from voting in the Presidential election after the first round was won by the opposition. It has sickened people world wide. The imprisonment of leaders of the political opposition and the banning of trade union leaders from speaking in public continues.



We understand clearly that Mugabe and his army will listen to no-one. They have stated this publicly

Nevertheless he appealed to the ambassadors to ' pass on to your government this protest against their horrific violation of the rights of the people of Zimbabwe.

On a personal level you know what it is like to live in a democratic country like Switzerland or Germany and as proud as you used to be of your country, you must now feel ashamed of the current situation. You may even be afraid to return. When terror begins the difference between friends and enemies can change so rapidly. No one can feel safe.



Therefore if you choose to seek political asylum in a democracy , it would be perfectly understandable . We hope that you do so before you too became too tainted by the record of your government.'
