UNI Global Union joins its affiliate KSKSTMB (TV3 Union) and the UNI Malaysian Liasion Council in condemning the attack and killing of colleague Noramfaizul Mohd Nor, cameraman of Bernama TV. Noramfaizul Mohd Nor was killed while on an aid mission in Mogadishu Somalia on 2 September. His colleague and fellow cameraman Aji Saregar Mazlan from TV3 was wounded in the incident.
First press reports said that soldiers of AMISON, the African Union’s peacekeeping force opened fire on the vehicle of the two colleagues when they travelled back to Mogadishu airport. Noramfaizul Moh Nor and Aji Saregar Mazlan participated in a aid mission to help famine victims and were accompanying the Malaysian aid agency Putera 1Malaysia Club. The team was due to travel back home on Saturday. Noramfaizfum Moh Nor leaves behind a wife and two sons.
“This tragic incident involving our Media personnel has touched the heart of the International Media Community and all Malaysians, especially the Media fraternity, who have lost a courageous, passionate and dedicated colleague” said Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal , President of the UNI Malaysian Liaison Council (UNI-MLC).
“UNI Global Union reiterates UNI MLC’s condemnation of this attack and calls for improved security measures to be implemented for media workers in Somalia” UNI Global Union General Secretary, Philip Jennings, said. Somalia ranks as the deadliest country in Africa for media workers with more than 20 workers killed since 2007.
UNI joins KSKSTMB and the UNI-MLC extending it’s condolences to the family and friends of Noramfaizfum Moh Nor.
