In a press statement released on 23 April, UNI affiliate MANDATE denounces TESCO’s attempt to infringe upon working conditions in Ireland. TESCO Ireland’s demand that workers accept pay cuts and fewer working hours comes as the company recently announced an increase in annual profits by 10 %, making more than £3.1bn after taxes.



UNI commerce is appaled that a global company would ask its loyal employees to accept reduced working conditions when the company hauls in such profits. UNI commerce fully supports Mandate in its claim that the company's behaviour is totally unacceptable and contravenes TESCO’s own code of conduct.



The union had written to Tesco stating that they are available to meet with the company in order to resolve the conflict, but the company continues to honour exisiting agreements.



It was now announced that more than 80 of the union members in Tesco in Douglas, Co. Cork will go on strike indefinitely starting from next Wednesday, 29 April 2009.
