Representatives from the UNI Care Sector in the Americas gathered at the 1st Women’s Meeting of UNI Care, in which more than 25 delegates from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and the host country, Argentina participated. The meeting took place in Buenos Aires on April 11th, with the support and encouragement of UNI Equal Opportunities, UNI Americas and the Argentinian Federation of Health Workers of Argentina, FATSA. The meeting’s objective was to address, from a gender perspective, the specific issues that arise in the health sector; in which women representation is as high as 80% for some countries in the Americas.



The participants discussed issues such as violence and health workers, casualization in the industry, the organization of workers in the new areas of residential and emergency care; and finally, the use of collective bargaining as a tool for equal opportunities.



Upon completion, the participants took part in work groups aimed at analyzing and identifying strategies to organize these workers. They concluded that it is key to:

1. Conduct a mapping of workers to know where they are. This way the union can approach them and inform them of their rights, explaining to them that the guild is there to help them get training, protect them and help them get better at their jobs.
3. The concern of the union for invisible and vulnerable workers (women) who have jobs of lower social value but equally important for society.
5. The training of workers who provide home care services is essential from the point of view of the union.
7. Search for workers who are not yet members of the union.
