UNI Global Union has bid farewell to UNI Africa President Gabou Gueye who has retired from the labour movement.



Gabou was elected UNI Africa's First Vice President and then filled the President role on an interim basis. He was also the President of UNI Africa Telecoms Committee and the General Secretary of SNTPT, the postal and telecoms union in Senegal.



Announcing Gabou’s retirement at the 2^nd UNI Africa Regional Conference in Hammamet, Tunisia on 12 May 2009, UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings said Gabou was a brilliant ambassador for UNI Africa who gave the region the visibility it required.



“He is our father figure, a champion of women issues who stood up against corruption and united the labour movement in Senegal. We can always rely on him to deliver the union message. He leaves UNI Africa stronger than it has ever been. We wish him a happy retirement,” said Jennings.



Gabou was elected to the Executive Committee of the Postal, Telegraph and Telephone International (PTTI) in 1995. In 1999 the PTTI changed its name to Communications International and in 2000 merged with three other international trade secretariats to form UNI Global Union.



Among his achievements is the France Telecoms Union Alliance which he started in Africa and was chief negotiator for the global agreement that UNI has signed with France Telecoms.



And UNI Telecoms President Bo Larsen described Gabou as a great leader for Africa and UNI Telecoms.
