“Aviva is a very profitable company that is cutting staff,” said UNI General Philip Jennings. “We expect company management to at least sit down and negotiate with UNITE on all aspects of their plans for the cuts and we stand in solidarity with the union members. We are also extremely concerned that such a massive cut to their workforce will lead to a dramatic drop in customer service that could endanger the company’s Irish business and brand.”
The workers, who belong to UNI affiliate UNITE, are taking action after company management said they will combine Aviva Ireland with Aviva UK to form a new UK and Ireland Region that could cut 180 jobs from Aviva Europe in Ireland and 770 from Aviva Ireland over two years. The company also said it could potentially outsource up to 300 jobs in Ireland
Aviva made £525 million in profits this year and no announcement has been made on any plans to cut executive compensation.

Staff from Dublin, Galway, Cork and nationwide retail offices have unanimously voted to hold a ballot for industrial action and also voted overwhelmingly that they have no confidence in management, UNITE said in a statement.
UNI Finance Global Union will support UNITE and the Irish workers in their industrial action. As yet, the company has not given details on where the cuts will be made or on what basis. "This is unacceptable behaviour towards the loyal workforce of Aviva in Ireland" said Philip Jennings.
